Located east of the Community of Agios Georgios Kafkalou is the copper mine of Alestos (part of it falls within the boundaries of the Community of Xyliatos). The mine operated during the years 1971-1972, whereas today it remains inactive as there is no mining activity in the area. However, it is possible that the mine’s copper quantities will be exploited in the near future if the prices of this metal allow for this to happen. Some works have taken place at the mine so as to tackle the problem of acid flows deriving from the deposits of sulphurous low quality minerals, which have been disposed off in the area surrounding the mining area.
